The Town Hall Hotel was formerly the residence of Erasmus Irving before the site was licensed in 1868.
According to Pots, Punks & Punters the St Kilda historical society’s excellent history of South Melbourne pubs by Becky Aizen the Town Hall was originally called the Cosmopolitan & was in operation in 1868. It was renamed the Town Hall around 1881 by C Harding probably as a result of the construction of the magnificent South Melbourne Town Hall a year or so earlier. World renowned singer Sylvia Fisher retained a family interest in the hotel even after joining Londons Covent Garden Opera Company in 1949.
Patrons, that have included over the years many notables {and some not so noteworthy} from the music and entertainment industries, have always enjoyed the warm and friendly welcome that is a signature of the hotel much like its art deco facade remodelled in 1936. We hope to continue the traditions of the hotel while providing a country feel to an intimate city pub.
